Family Fishing Adventure at Blanco State Park: A Hidden Gem in the Texas Hill Country

You know what I love most about my husband being into fishing? The adventures it takes our family on. Lately, he and our boys have gotten hooked on fly fishing, which means more time outside, more laughter, and more chances to explore this beautiful Texas Hill Country we’re lucky to call home.

Just a few weekends back, we loaded up the car (and all that gear they "absolutely needed") and made our way to Blanco State Park, tucked right off Highway 281 in the heart of Blanco, Texas. It’s a peaceful little spot just about an hour from Austin and San Antonio. Easy to get to, hard to leave.

Five minutes before we left the house, my husband was tying on flies to his rod. For some reason, he added two to the line. My 12-year-old asked, “Are you trying to catch two fish at the same time?” My husband just smiled and said, “Guess we’ll see.”

And sure enough… he did.

Within 30 minutes of casting near the dam, he pulled up two sunfish at once. The boys were stunned. I couldn’t stop laughing. It was one of those moments you know you’ll never forget.

What made the day even better? Admission to Blanco State Park is just five dollars per person for ages 13 and up, and kids 12 and under get in free. Even better, you don’t need a fishing license to fish from the shore inside the park. We have our licenses, but it’s great knowing it’s not a requirement.

Of course, fishing is just one of the many reasons to visit Blanco State Park.

Though it’s just over 100 acres, the park is packed with charm. The spring-fed Blanco River flows through it, creating clear swimming holes, calm paddling waters, and a shallow wading pool for younger kids. The hiking trails are short and manageable, and the towering pecan and cypress trees offer plenty of shade for a peaceful afternoon.

There’s a rustic beauty to the park, thanks to the Civilian Conservation Corps. Back in the 1930s, they built the stone dams, picnic areas, and other landmarks still in use today. Everything feels timeless and handcrafted, like a step back into simpler times.

That evening, we headed home as the sun set behind the trees, a little sunburned and a lot happy. The boys are already planning an overnight camping trip, which you can absolutely do. Blanco State Park offers tent sites, RV hookups, and even screened shelters right by the river.

If you’re looking for a quick, affordable family getaway, Blanco State Park is one of the best-kept secrets in the Texas Hill Country.
