Why Pedernales Falls Should Be on Your Hill Country Bucket List

We could see them. Giant fish, gliding just beneath the surface of the Pedernales River. So close. So obvious. So… completely uninterested in our bait.

It was one of those days that didn’t go as planned. We didn’t catch a single fish. It rained. And yet, somehow, it ended up being one of our favorite Hill Country adventures to date.

We spent the afternoon chasing shadows in the water, laughing off our bad luck, and dodging raindrops under a picnic pavilion. The river, normally a calm companion, turned moody and dramatic against the gray sky. The kind of quiet only a rainy day can create settled in around us.

Then came the sunset.

Just as we were about to pack it in, the clouds broke and the entire river lit up like it was on fire. The limestone bluffs turned golden, the sky melted into lavender and peach, and the Pedernales shimmered like a scene from a movie.

It reminded me why we keep exploring the Hill Country. Why we keep showing up, rain or shine.

What You’ll Find at Pedernales Falls

Located just 30 miles west of Austin, Pedernales Falls State Park is sprawling and wild, with over 5,000 acres of rugged beauty. The Pedernales River cuts through massive limestone slabs, cascading over flat rocks and into serene pools that feel like nature’s own quiet sanctuary.

It’s the kind of place that makes you feel small, in the best possible way.

Here’s what you’ll discover when you go:

  • Scenic Hiking Trails – Take the easy Twin Falls Nature Trail (perfect for kids) or stretch yourself on the Wolf Mountain Trail, a longer loop with stunning views.

  • Water Adventures – While swimming is restricted near the main falls (the currents are dangerous), calmer stretches of the river are perfect for tubing, wading, or kayaking when water levels allow.

  • Wildlife Watching – Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, armadillos, and a wide range of Hill Country birds.

  • Camping Options – From shaded tent sites to backcountry camping, the park offers plenty of ways to spend the night under the stars.

  • Mountain Biking – Several trails are open for biking, giving riders a rugged taste of the Hill Country landscape.

Know Before You Go

A few tips to make your visit smoother:

  • Day passes are $6 per adult, and kids 12 and under are free.

  • Reserve your pass online ahead of time—weekends often sell out.

  • Bring water shoes—the limestone rocks are slick and sharp.

  • Pack for the weather. The Hill Country can turn from sun to storm in minutes (as we learned!).

  • Plan your hikes in cooler months or early mornings during summer.

Why We Keep Coming Back

We didn’t hike far this time—just enough to catch the Twin Falls Trail and let the kids scramble over boulders—but the beauty of Pedernales Falls is that you never run out of things to do. Every visit is different. Sometimes it’s all about the hikes. Sometimes it’s about fishing or camping. And sometimes, like our rainy afternoon, it’s about slowing down and letting the place surprise you.

Pedernales Falls has a way of sticking with you—not because everything goes perfectly, but because it doesn’t. Because the fish outsmart you. Because it rains. Because the sunset makes it all worth it.
